A 32-team single-elimination tournament has 31 games and 5 rounds. A complete 32-team field has no byes because 32 is a power of two.

The Calculation

Every game eliminates one team. To produce one champion from 32 teams, the tournament must eliminate 31 teams:

Total games = number of teams - 1
32 - 1 = 31 games

This formula counts the championship game but does not include an optional third-place playoff. Add one more game if your event awards third place through a separate match.

The number of games halves after every round: 16, 8, 4, 2, and 1. Adding those values gives 31.

What Changes If There Are Byes?

The formula still works when fewer than 32 teams occupy a 32-position bracket. For example, a 28-team single-elimination tournament still requires 27 played games to determine a champion. Four first-round positions become byes, but a bye is an automatic advance—not a played game.

The bracket may still display five rounds because it uses a 32-position structure. The distinction is important: bracket size determines the potential round structure, while actual entrants determine the number of played games. Read how tournament byes work before placing incomplete fields.

How Many Games Does Each Team Play?

The champion plays five games in a full 32-team bracket. A team that loses in the first round plays once, while a semifinal loser plays four games.

This assumes there are no byes and no placement games.

Estimating Schedule Length

Thirty-one games do not necessarily mean 31 consecutive time slots. Multiple venues let independent games run at the same time.

With eight venues, the first round needs two waves of eight games. The later rounds need one wave each if enough venues remain available. That produces approximately six match waves:

2 first-round waves + 1 round-of-16 wave + 1 quarterfinal wave
+ 1 semifinal wave + 1 final wave = 6 waves

If an average match takes 30 minutes and changeover takes 5 minutes, six waves take about 210 minutes before adding breaks and an overrun buffer. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a guarantee: match-length variation and venue availability can extend the event.

Build and Run the Tournament

Before generating the bracket, collect the entrants, decide whether they should be seeded, and number every playable venue. Create the 32-team tournament to generate advancement paths and record results as matches finish.
