Games in Each Round
| Round | Teams starting the round | Games | Teams advancing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round of 16 | 16 | 8 | 8 |
| Quarterfinals | 8 | 4 | 4 |
| Semifinals | 4 | 2 | 2 |
| Final | 2 | 1 | 1 champion |
| Total | — | 15 | — |
The tournament starts with eight simultaneous pairings. Every later round contains half as many games as the round before it: 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 15.
Why 16 Teams Need 15 Games
Every single-elimination game removes one team from championship contention. The tournament must eliminate 15 teams to leave one champion:
Total games = number of teams - 1
16 - 1 = 15 games
This total includes the final. It does not include an optional third-place playoff; add one separate game if your event uses one.
How Many Games Does the Champion Play?
The champion plays four games in a complete 16-team bracket. Other teams play until their first loss.
| Finish | Games played |
|---|---|
| Champion | 4 |
| Runner-up | 4 |
| Semifinalist | 3 |
| Quarterfinalist | 2 |
| First-round loser | 1 |
These counts assume there are no byes. A team receiving a bye advances without playing, so it can win the tournament in fewer than four played games.
What If Fewer Than 16 Teams Register?
Keep the 16-position bracket and add byes. A 14-team field needs two byes and still displays four rounds, but it has only 13 played games:
16 bracket positions - 14 entrants = 2 byes
14 entrants - 1 = 13 played games
A bye is not a game and should not be recorded as a win over a placeholder. In seeded events, the highest seeds normally receive the byes. For the placement rules and non-power-of-two examples, use the tournament bye guide.
How Long Does a 16-Team Tournament Take?
Elapsed time depends on how many venues can run matches at once. The tournament always contains four rounds, but each round may need multiple waves.
| Available venues | Opening-round waves | Minimum total waves |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 4 | 8 |
| 4 | 2 | 5 |
| 8 | 1 | 4 |
The minimum assumes each later round can start as soon as its required matches finish. With four venues, for example, the eight opening games take two waves, followed by one quarterfinal wave, one semifinal wave, and the final.
If one match slot is 35 minutes, five waves take about 175 minutes before check-in, breaks, delayed matches, and changeovers. Use that as a planning baseline rather than a guaranteed finish time.
Create the 16-Team Bracket
Collect the 16 entrant names, decide whether placement is seeded or random, and confirm the available venues before publishing the draw. Then create the 16-team tournament to keep the bracket, venue assignments, advancement, and results together.
